Einkaufszentren

The market has existed for centuries in human history, but only recently has the market transitioned to the store and then to the Einkaufszentrum and mall.
What can be observed about the growth and spread of malls and center in former East Berlin? 

The rapid pace of globalization and consumerism fills the vacuum created by the collapse of a socialist state. Rather than passing a moral judgment on whether shopping centers are bad / good, examine the use of space. Who was displaced, who now goes there, who or what  comes next? Can shopping centers be aesthetic objects? Can we imagine the mall in 100 years? In 5,000 years?
